Dorstone Chalice

The 13th Century Dorstone Chalice. A rare pewter Chalice and Paten were found in a tomb thought to be that of Johannes de Brito who died in 1275, which was accidentally broken into during the rebuilding in 1827. Sadly, both were stolen in 2005 and have never been recovered.

We'd love to have it back!

At our recent meeting, it was agreed that we don’t want to formalise the society at this point, but that we need more structure in order to search for and collate our information.

Documents - this is where you can help us - we are genuinely interested in all aspects of local history of the Dorstone area.  If you have house deeds, old letters, photographs, wills that you would share with us, we have equipment to scan documents which will not damage them so that we can keep a copy and owners can keep the originals.

Family Stories - We are also interested in the little snippets of information that people remember from their childhood – often these turn out to be based on fact and can be researched.  E.g. several people remember tales of tunnels from castles to churches or farmhouses.

Our plan is to cover the following topics with contacts for each:

Castle sites – Dorstone, Mynydd Brith, Snodhill, Urishay etc. - Sarah Catterall

Dorstone Church and other religious sites - Penny Platts

Dorstone School and othersCath Gaze, Sybil Jones, Sue Verrill

Transport - Roads & RailwaysMaurice Church (download article)

**Family History – If anyone is interested in tracing their families or those who previously lived in their properties, then do contact Brian as he is Secretary to the Herefordshire Family History Society and would be delighted to help in finding records.

We hope to put regular updates on the website and have another meeting in February 2010 to share with everyone the new discoveries we’ve made over the winter.
